Tommy Armstrong Named to Davey O’Brien Award Watch List
Another day, another Nebraska football player on a preseason award watch list.
This time around the player on the award watch list is Cornhuskers quarterback Tommy Armstrong. Armstrong, coming off a season that had plenty go right and even more go wrong, is looking to put an exclamation point on his career in his senior season.
Despite being among the nation’s leaders in interceptions thrown with 16, Tommy is one of those quarterbacks who has enough talent that, should he find a way to cut down on his picks, could turn into one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
The Davey O’Brien Award Committee certainly believes this to be the case, as he’s among some rather talented company. Only 30 quarterbacks were named to the award watch list, though as is the case with other lists, those being watched can certainly change as the season goes on.
The announcement on Thursday morning that Tommy Armstrong is on the Davey O’Brien watch list comes just one day after two of his top aerial targets made their own list. Jordan Westerkamp and Brandon Reilly were both named to the Biletnikoff Award list.
The Biletnikoff is given annually to the country’s best wide receiver. It says something about the talent level at wide receiver that the team got two members on that list. If the person that is going to get them the ball can put up a season worthy of watching by the Davey O’Brien award committee, then the Huskers could have a very good season indeed.

Of the 30 names on the list, the Big Ten did quite well for itself. In addition to Tommy Armstrong, Ohio State’s, J.T. Barrett, Illinois’ Wes Lunt, Minnesota’s Mitch Leidner and Iowa’s C.J. Beathard have been named to the Davey O’Brien award watch list.
