Husker Football: Top 10 Teams of All-Time
10. 1999
After a frustrating inaugural 9-4 season under coach Frank Solich in 1998, the Huskers bounced back to be one of the nation’s elite teams in 1999.
Led by Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and future Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Eric Crouch, Nebraska stormed through the 1999 season by beating every opponent on their schedule, including four Top 25 opponents.
Unfortunately, it took two tries to topple the Texas Longhorns as the Big Red fell in an earlier meeting 24-20. The Huskers would repay Bevo’s bunch 22-6 to claim the conference crown.
Nebraska was edged out in the BCS formula by undefeated Florida State and Virginia Tech, but they did finish up the season by beating defending national champion Tennessee 31-21 in the Orange Bowl.
The season and bowl win was good enough to earn a No. 2 ranking in the final Coaches Top 25 poll.
