After breaking through with back-to-back Top 10 finishes, head coach Bob Devaney  and Nebraska entered 1965 as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation.

The Huskers proved the hype was for real as they steamrolled through their regular season schedule unscathed.

Unfortunately, No. 3 Nebraska was one of three undefeated teams entering bowl season.

The Huskers matched up with legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and the defending national champion No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide in the Orange Bowl.

Losses by No. 1 Michigan State and No. 2 Arkansas on New Year’s Day set up for the that game determine the National Champion.

The Cornhuskers were unable to rebound from a 24-7 halftime deficit, eventually losing 39-28.
