8. Rutgers (13)

Last Week: W 41-38 over Washington State

Maybe the Scarlet Knights didn’t get the memo. They were supposed to, you know, stink.

Rutgers went punch-for-punch with one of the nation’s most prolific passing games led by Mike Leach and edged his Cougars with a late touchdown before picking off a Wazzu pass to win the game.

The Scarlet Knights were constantly in a position to lose, but every time they needed a play, they made it. Admittedly, a Washington State muffed punt may have ultimately lost them the game.

A usually shaky Gary Nova hit some big time throws, but Rutgers settled on the running game as its weapon of choice. Paul James was in beast mode, finishing with 29 carries for 174 yards and three touchdowns.

The Big Ten conference slate may be a fierce wake up call as Washington State deliberately ran for six yards in total. However, the big road win should give Rutgers confidence as the season continues.

This Week: Howard (Sept 6 – 11 A.M. on BTN)

My Prediction: Rutgers 52-10
