3. DeJon Gomes

Gomes was the prototype for Pelini’s “Peso” role. When introduced, the position fascinated the fan base and Gomes played it well.

He finished his two-year career with 145 tackles (74 solo), 17 tackles for loss, eight tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, seven interceptions and a partridge in a pear tree.

Whether Pelini needed an enforcer in run support or a defensive back with more physicality than your av-er-age member of the secondary, that’s where Gomes came in. His hard work paid off, too.

He was drafted by the Washington Redskins in round No. 5 of the 2011 NFL draft. Though he was waived in 2013, he now has a home as a member of the Detroit Lions.
