National Recruit Signing Day: 2015 Husker Linebackers
By Brent Craig
National Recruit Signing Day is a special day for college football all across America. Teams across the nation are celebrating their recruiting success and head coaches are preparing for press conferences and recruiting events to celebrate with their fans. Nebraska Cornhusker Head Coach Mike Riley is no different. His press conference is set for 2:00 pm signing day. He’s also preparing for the Nebraska Football National Signing Day Party scheduled for 6:00 pm. National Recruit Signing Day is special to Husker Nation as we get an official look at what players we will get to see don the Husker uniform and represent BIG RED on the football battlefield.
Outside linebacker Mohamed Barry of Loganville, GA, is the first Husker commit to sign his letter of intent on NSD. Barry is rated as a 3 star recruit and was recruited by Huskers coaches Charlton Warren and Trent Bray. Barry committed to Nebraska on January 29th, 2015 shortly after he visited the Huskers just six days prior.
He’s not the only Linebacker who signed LOI today to play for Nebraska. 3 star outside linebacker Tyrin Ferguson of New Orleans, LA is joining the Blackshirts. Ferguson committed to the Huskers on December 6, 2014 and his recruiting coach was Trent Bray. Ferguson was finally able to visit Nebraska on January 23, 2015 which helped shore up his commitment.
UPDATE: Adrienne Talan was a signee after lunch. He’s a HUSKER now and comes from Ft. Lauderdale. 3 stars and ranked 151 in the state of Florida (so that’s a good number!)
Although listed as a running back, 3 star Dedrick Young of Peoria, AZ, will most likely play linebacker for the Huskers. Young was an early enrollee and has been going through winter conditioning with his fellow Huskers. Young originally committed to the previous staff under Bo Pelini, but Mike Riley was able to convince him to stay with Nebraska. Husker Linebacker Coach Trent Bray became his recruiting coach once the new staff took over.

These recruits will become students of Defensive Coordinator Mark Banker, Linebacker Coach Trent Bay, Secondary Coach Charlton Warren, Defensive Line Coach Hank Hughes, and graduate assistant Max Onyegbule. And if coach Bruce Reed has his way, we may see one of them on special teams. But before these coaches get their hands on these two new Huskers, they will be working hard in the gym with head strength coach Mark Phillipp and his 4 assistants.
There are several players on the depth chart ahead of them that they will need to beat out if they do not wish to red-shirt. These players are Senior David Santos, Juniors Josh Banderas and Michael Rose, Sophomore Marcus Newby, and Red-Shirt Freshman Luke Gifford. The linebacker depth chart looks a little bare so one of these 3 new Huskers may possibly get some playing time this next season. Fall camp will hopefully give us a better clue on just how soon these three new linebackers will contribute, until then let’s just enjoy this and GO BIG RED!!!
