Nebraska Cornhusker 2015 Recruits: Linebackers

facebooktwitterreddit

Nebraska’s Football Coach Mike Riley has a lot to do to make sure all of the previous staff’s recruits are secure and on board with the new coaches, but he also needs to build relationships with the new targets the Huskers would like to have commit to the university. The toughest aspect of recruiting for Mike Riley will face is the time factor. National recruit signing day is February 4. Right now the recruiting cycle is in a “dead period” until January 15, which means a college coach cannot make in-person visits with recruits, but telephone calls to the recruits are allowed. Time is not on the Huskers’ side.

Currently there is only one Linebacker commit for the Huskers. He is 6’2”, 210 lb., outside linebacker Tyrin Ferguson of New Orleans, Louisiana. Ferguson committed to Nebraska on December 6, 2014 under the new Husker coaching staff. Rivals recruiting service has Ferguson rated the 52nd best outside linebacker in the country, and the 36th best high school football player in the state of Louisiana. Both Rivals and 247Sports recruiting services rate Ferguson a three star linebacker. Ferguson was once an Oregon State commit, but is following his recruiting and position coach to the Huskers.

Ferguson’s head coach at Edna Karr High School called Tyrin a good kid that comes from a military family and also believes that Ferguson has the ability to morph into a Derrick Thomas type of linebacker. Ferguson was his district’s Defensive MVP award winner. You can check out Ferguson’s film here.

I have no doubt that Ferguson will not waiver from this commitment due to the relationship he has built with linebacker coach, Trent Bray and head coach, Mike Riley. The Huskers need to find at least one more linebacker for this recruiting class especially since linebacker Courtney Love announced he was transferring out of Nebraska before Mike Riley was hired. So which recruit has the best chance at becoming a Husker linebacker commit?

There are currently 32 linebacker scholarship offers issued by Nebraska but only 9 of those recruits are currently uncommitted. The best shot Nebraska has with the 9 remaining recruits are probably 3 star Saleem Brightwell out of Paramus, NJ and 3 star Jordan Fox out of Jersey City, NJ. There is another Oregon State linebacker commit that does currently have a Nebraska offer, 2 star Angelo Garbutt of Carrollton, TX, but it appears he is staying with his Oregon State.

Mike Riley may have some recruits up his sleeve that we don’t know about so we will just have to wait until the dead period ends.  I’m sure Riley and his staff will go out on the recruiting trail and work their magic in recruit’s living rooms immediately.
