Nebraska football fans were surprised earlier this week when new athletic director Troy Dannen announced the return of the red balloons for the Huskers’ game against Colorado. Could the AD have something else up his sleeve?

NU is pulling out all the stops for the Saturday night tilt between the old rivals. In addition to bringing back the red balloons as a celebration after a touchdown, Frank Solich and the 1994 National Championship team will be honored.

On Friday, rumors started swirling that the Nebraska football team could be wearing an unannounced alternate uniform. That despite the fact that earlier this fall, the administration went on the record as saying there was no alt uniform planned for the 2024 season.

The rumors hit a crescendo when NBC college football insider Nicole Auerbach posted several photos of an interview she did with Huskers head coach Matt Rhule. One photo in particular stood out thanks to an eagle-eyed fan who noticed the helmet that was sitting between Rhule and Auerbach during the interview.

Nebraska football could have alt uniform up its sleeve for Colorado game

“Spot the helmet for the interview today!!!!” Twitter user Jared Langel posted. “Spot the FREAKING HELMET!!!!”

The post quickly picked up steam as people started to notice that it definitely wasn’t the usual gameday helmet. This Nebraska headgear was black and white with a red chinstrap.

“Dang that looks fire,” one Husker fans wrote in response.

“I just want us to bring it back!” another posted.

However, one fan seemingly threw some cold water on the idea that the helmet was any kind of foreshadowing. They pointed out the reason the helmet was out there was because it was just the blackshirt helmet that was used in 2019 against the Indiana Hoosiers.

While an alternate uniform might not be in the cards, it feels as if the Nebraska football program does have something up its sleeve for kickoff. Former KLIN Radio sports director and current Husker Max contributor Kaleb Henry posted on Friday that fans should be in their seats and ready to go at least 10-15 minutes before game time. We’ll see what the buzz is about on Saturday night.
