There may not be a stranger end to a former Nebraska football player's career than what we saw occur this week regarding Randy Gregory.

Injuries are one thing. Aging out of the NFL happens all the time. But signing a free-agent deal and just not showing up? That's a new one, at least for former Huskers.

And yet, that's what the Nebraska football pass rusher extraordinaire did this month. He signed a deal with the Tampa Bay Bucs and then just never reported to camp. According to Bucs head coach Todd Bowles, the team reached out numerous times. They just never heard back. And so this week, they released him.

Ex-Nebraska football player looks to be done with the NFL

I suppose the first thing to point out is that I might be foolish for counting Randy Gregory as "done." After all, there were plenty of times when it looked like his NFL career wasn't even going to get off the ground.

But one has to wonder just how many chances he's going to get. After all, when your career starts late because you kept getting suspended for positive drug tests, not showing up or calling your team isn't going to sit well.

There are already some analysts talking about bringing Gregory back home to Dallas. Though he didn't exactly leave them on good terms. Not too long ago, he verbally agreed to a contract with the Cowboys, only to sign the exact same deal with the Denver Broncos.

For now, it sure seems as though Gregory's career is over. He might have even unofficially retired. If it is the end, it's.a confounding and sad way for the former Nebraska football star to call it a day.
