Nebraska football can't cash in on legacy vibes for top WR target
When it comes to Nebraska football recruiting, you win some and you lose some. For Matt Rhule and his staff, one particular Husker legacy prospect was a loss, though just how long they were really in the race is up for debate.
You can’t really blame NU for trying to steal Corey Simms away from the power competition. After all, Rhule has had quite a big of success when it comes to legacy prospects. Of course, it’s possible the degree of difficulty with Simms was higher because he’s not a football legacy.
Simms’ father, Corey Simms Sr. played for the Huskers’ basketball program rather than the Nebraska football team. That might be one of the reasons NU is no longer in the running for the 4-star wide receiver.
Nebraska football can’t cash in on legacy vibes with Corey Simms Jr.
Last week, Simms narrowed down the teams he’s still considering to a Top 3. The Huskers were not among them, despite looking like they might be able to pull off an upset earlier this spring.
Simms named Penn State, Missouri and USC his final schools. It has to smart a little bit extra that there is at least a 67 percent chance the NU legacy is will be going up against his dad’s old program in the next few years.
Of course, the odds-on favorite is that Simms will stick home. He’s the number one player in the state of Missouri in the 2025 class. With the Tigers putting together a surprisingly good campaign together last year, it would make sense for him to stick around.
On3 currently gives the 6-foot-3, 186-pound wideout an 86 percent chance of staying in Missouri. That would definitely take the sting out of losing him.
For Nebraska football, being left out of the race means going back to the drawing board when it comes to recruiting the wide receiver position this cycle.
