Nebraska football reunion with former QB1 reportedly on the way
Is Matt Rhule about to fix the biggest mistake he's made since coming to Nebraska football? It certainly appears as if big news is brewing in that department. Rumors of a reunion have been in the works for about a week, but on Sunday morning, things got heated.
The rumors, of course, are that Casey Thompson is returning to the Nebraska football program. Those rumors were jumpstarted when Thompson was spotted in Lincoln hanging out with Husker running back Gabe Ervin. At the time, Husker Nationa was split between thinking it was a sign the 7th year quarterback was transferring to Lincoln, and believing he was just seeing some old friends.
According to former WOWT News staffer, Michael Snow, Thompson was indeed in Lincoln to talk about playing quarterback for the Huskers one more time. What's more, Snow said that news of his commitment and transfer back for a second ride is "coming soon."
At first, Snow was somewhat cryptic when he posted on X that "quarterback news" was on the way. He added that it was an "old friend alert." However, he didn't play any games when a social media follower asked if he was talking about Casey Thompson. He replied that he has someone he trusts "saying so."
Nebraska football quarterback room seeing some changes
A return to Nebraska for Casey Thompson might seem wild, but it's important to remember all indications when Rhule was first hired, was that the quarterback planned to play a second season at NU. There are diferent stories about what happened after the spring game last year, but for one reason or another Thompson ended up changing his mind and transferring to Florida Atlantic.
While he got off to a solid start for the Owls, he suffered an injury that cut his season short. That's why he was granted a seventh year. Now he'll return to the place where he posted a career high 2,407 yards despite missing several games to injury. He also threw 17 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions while completing 63 percent of his passes in 2022.
Those numbers would have almost certainly have led Nebraska football to a bowl game.
