Nebraska Cornhuskers News: Full coaching staff returns despite uncertainty, more
- Ernie Zeigler is likely returning for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
- There was a chance he would be hired away by Detroit Mercy.
- Baseball and softball are both on tears.
While things have been a little chaotic for the Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball team this offseason, Fred Hoiberg and company got a bit of good news that has nothing to do with the players. It looks like the Huskers coaching staff will be returning for the 2024-2025 season.
Until this week, that wasn’t exactly a given. Detroit Mercy just hired a new head coach. That head coach is former Michigan State assistant coach Mark Montgomery. Normally, that wouldn’t move the needle in Lincoln, Nebraska, but this hire is different.
Nebraska Cornhuskers assistant Ernie Zeigler was said to be one of the top prospects for the job. However since he was passed over for the job for a Tom Izzo disciple, it looks like he’ll be returning to Lincoln for at least one more season.
That’s good news for a Nebraska Cornhuskers team that is going to be having to get a lot of new faces to mesh quickly.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team continues to be on an insane roll, especially in the Big Ten conference. The Huskers beat Ohio State on Saturday, 7-3 in order to improve to 5-0 in conference and 22-6 overall. The first-place team is looking to go for its second straight sweep on Sunday. At the moment, they’re holding off Michigan and Illinois who are both off to good starts to the season as well.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball team got some very good news earlier this week when Juwan Gary and Brice Williams announced they’re coming back for one more season. Now the Huskers are waiting on Rienk Mast to make his announcement. For now, it’s not coming soon. Though one has to think next week would work.
Remember when the Nebraska Cornhuskers softball team looked like it was jinxed after it lost its best player to a season-ending injury? They’ve officially and completely turned things around. The Huskers have won 15 of their last 19 games and are 6-1 in the conference. They’ll look to win one more against Penn State on Sunday and keep pace with a surprisingly good Northwestern squad.
