The Nebraska Cornhuskers looked like they were going to pick up right where they left off on Friday night. And then things went haywire against the Grand Canyon University Lopes. In the end, too many mistakes were made by Will Bolt’s team, and another game they should have won, ended up a 7-5 loss.
Losing games they were in a position to win has happened too often so far for the Huskers. It has in fact, happened three times in six games. The good news there is that Nebraska has shown that it has enough talent to win every game its played in.
The bad news is that the new look Cornhuskers haven’t quite figured out how to put a team away when they have them on the ropes. It happened last weekend against Texas Tech and Oklahoma. It happened Saturday against GCU. Three good teams. Three teams NU could be undefeated against with a better pitch, throw or field.
Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball's mistakes pile up against GCU
Things started out well enough. In fact, after the top of the first, the Nebraska baseball team took a 3-0 lead thanks to Josh Caron hitting yet another homerun and driving in three runs. However, neither Will Walsh, nor the Huskers defense was all that sharp on Saturday night.
A throwing error by Dylan Carey opened the floodgates in the bottom of the 1st and GCU ended up drawing within one run. Two innings later they took a 4-3 lead and while the Huskers were able to tie it in the top of the fifth, the tie was short lived.
GCU scored two more runs to take a 6-4 lead and never looked back. In the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, the Cornhuskers forged a challenge but were unable to get more than one out of the deal.
All of that, led to the end of a two-game winning streak. On Sunday, the Nebraksa Cornhuskers will take on Grand Canyon University and try to start another winning streak.
