Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball has another 'what could have been' game
The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team had the kind of weekend that just might come back to haunt them by the end of the season. For a second straight day, Will Bolt's squad had a very good Big 12 team on the ropes. For the second straight day, they lost in the 9th inning.
For the second straight game, the Nebraska Cornhuskers couldn't come through with a timely hit, when one timely hit might have meant the end of the game. They also couldn't get the big out and didn't play particularly good defense down the stretch.
All of those miscues in the final frames led to the Huskers blowing a 6-5 9th inning lead to eventually lose 7-6 and fall to 1-2 on the season. Oklahoma isn't on the same level as Texas Tech as far as being ranked, but considering they almost beat the 9th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers. A win over OU would have been a resume builder. It turns out it wasn't.
Key moment
Casey Daiss came into the game in the 9th inning trying to get his second save of the season. After working around allowing a leadoff single by getting the next two outs, it appeared he was going to get out of it. However, Michael Snyder's double, coupled with a fielding error by Garrett Anglim and Jaxon Willits' walkoff RBI single handed Nebraska its second loss in as many days in the final inning.
Why the Nebraska Cornhuskers lost
For the second straight game, the Nebraska Cornhuskers bullpen couldn't hold a lead. Kyle Perry, Drew Christo and Daiss combined to allow 6 runs in just 3 innings of work.
Stats That Matter
- D2 transfer player Clay Bradford made his Nebraska Cornhuskers debut on Sunday. He went 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts.
- The Huskers 5th-8th batters were a black hole of offense. Combined they went 0-for-14 with a walk.
Nebraska Cornhuskers Bottom Line
Nebraska is now 1-2 on the season and those two losses looked earily similar. They also looked earily similar to quite a few losses from 2023. There's plenty of time to fix things and this is still a team finding it's footing but the weekend went from being a positive to a negatvie quickly.
