If you’re a current member of the Nebraska basketball team, please raise your had. Jamarques Lawrence, not so fast!

Hoiberg’s Heroes have been taking some hits since the transfer portal opened up. It’s possible that none of those hits have been as hard as Monday’s departure of Lawrence. The sophomore guard is said to have entered this evening making it five Huskers looking to play basketball elsewhere next season.

Over the past two seasons, Lawrence appeared in 62 games with 32 starts. The sophomore seems to have morphed himself into a super sub this season. Someone who would be a great sixth man, if the Cornhuskers didn’t already have that with CJ Wilcher and Juwan Gary at times.

His departure is also an odd one considering that it looked like he’d found a role that would allow him to be in line for a starting spot for the Nebraska basketball team in 2024-2025. Lawrence had spent most of his high school career as wel as his first season in Lincoln off the ball.

This past season, Lawrence was named the No. 1 point guard. He rewarded the team for that move by averaging 2.5 assists per game while also chipping in some scoring. He had 6.9 points per contest and there were a few games where he singlehandedly kept the Cornhuskers in a game, or brought them back from the brink of defeat.

Notre Dame basketball loses another valuable piece

Lawrence’s career best game came in an important 85-70 win over the Indiana Hoosiers. In that contest he scored 19 points, was 5-for-5 from beyond the arc, hauled down 6 rebounds and also dished out 5 assists.

In total, Lawrence had 4 or more assists in a game, eight times this season. Now the Huskers are definitely on the lookout for another point guard for next season.

In addition to Lawrence and Wilcher, the Nebraska basketball team has seen Eli Rice, Ramel Lloyd and Blaise Keita all enter the portal in the last seven days.
