No. 2: Cory Schlesinger | Detroit Lions |
---|---|
Fullback | 1995 - 6th Round |
How about another great Nebraska fullback for our list? In 1995, Cory Schlesinger was a 6th-round pick by the Detroit Lions on his way to a legendary NFL career.
A two-year starter for the Cornhuskers, he is a Nebraska legend for scoring two late TDs against Miami in the 1995 Orange Bowl to help Nebraska secure its first National Championship under Tom Osborne.
Schlesinger spend four seasons of his NFL career blocking for arguably the best running back of all-time, Barry Sanders. He helped Sanders run for at least 1,491 yards in each of those seasons including 2,053 in 1997.
For his career, Schlesinger played in 181 games running for 1,445 yards and 9 TDs. However, the numbers don't tell the story.
He was a 3-time Pro Bowl selection (2002-04). What's more, he was honored as a member of the Detroit Lions 75th anniversary team and All-Time team. Schlesinger will go down as one of the last great NFL fullbacks as he played in the era just before the spread offense took over the NFL and the Nebraska legend is one of the biggest draft gems in Cornhusker history.
