Now that Trae Taylor is in Nebraska and preparing for his senior season at Millard South, he’s making noise. Sometimes the 5-star quarterback does it with his mouth, and sometimes he does it with his actions. His latest comments will likely resonate for a while, especially in the state just about 20 minutes away from his new school.
Competing in a 7-on-7 tournament in Lincoln, Trae Taylor and his Millard South squad took down a group from Lewis Central (Council Bluffs). After the win, the Husker quarterback commit was plenty hyped up about his victory and made a statement that Iowa Hawkeyes fans are already seizing on and will undoubtedly seize on again once his freshman season at NU finally arrives.
“Never losing to Iowa ever. I’m telling you,” Taylor said as he walked by a person shooting the celebration. Hawkeyes fans and Nebraska fans alike instantly knew what that sort of statement means for his college career when it begins in 2027.
“This is going triple platinum when we lose to Iowa,” one fan commented in the thread following the video.

Trae Taylor’s Iowa comment gives Nebraska football rivalry plenty of future spice
“Why does everyone associated with Nebraska run their mouth before doing anything? Yall must have an embarrassment kink,” an Iowa fan responded to the video. That fan later said he would thoroughly enjoy “hate watching” Taylor and fellow Nebraska commit Tay Ellis once their college careers started.
“Can’t wait to bring out this bookmark each November,” another Hawkeye follower wrote, apparently not realizing that Taylor won’t even be at Nebraska this November.
There are bound to be some Husker fans who get annoyed at the bravado coming out of a high school star who hasn’t played a down for the Nebraska Cornhuskers yet. Those people worry that if he loses to Iowa at some point in his career, his words will be held against him.
Worrying that his comments are bulletin board material for Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is valid, but the thing about Trae Taylor and why NU fans need to loosen up is that it’s good that their future quarterback doesn’t feel the pain of the many, many losses to its next-door rival. That’s a good thing. He should have confidence that he’ll always beat the Hawkeyes.
It’s a good thing that he has the confidence to outduel a perennial Nebraska high school powerhouse, Omaha Westside, during the same tournament. He needs to step on the field knowing he’ll win. That’s the confidence Husker fans should want.
A similar situation occurred earlier this spring when Nebraska’s likely QB1 for the 2026 season, Anthony Colandrea, talked about his expectations for his new team. Fans wanted him to just “shut up and play” then, too. It’s an interesting conundrum to play for NU. On the one hand, the public is tired of the Cornhuskers looking meek and mild every game. On the other hand, when they demonstrate the confidence a team needs to knock off the cream of the crop, no one wants to hear it.
Sooner or later, Nebraska football fans need to learn to embrace when a player - especially a player new to the struggles that have plagued the program for decades - shows the kind of confidence this program needs in order to take the next step.
