Nebraska’s quiet summer still leaves huge questions before kickoff

Nebraska football’s countdown comes with major questions at QB and offensive line

66 days until Nebraska Football is back! Everything interesting for the summer months is already done (softball & baseball).. Even though it's the midpoint later this week, with the 250th celebration of the 4th of July, fall just needs to hurry up. Waiting for Husker Football to start up again feels like it's taking for..e...ver. Next thing up is B1G Ten Media Days at the end of July. However, with Center Justin Evans (mostly a quiet guy), cornerback Andrew Marshall (I had to look him up even though he had 45 tackles and started 13 games last year), and tight end Luke Lindenmeyer on the docket, it's not exactly begging for a bag of popcorn to go with it. Regardless, I have several burning questions I want answered about Husker Football.

For example, what will Geep Wade's O-line look like? Head Coach Matt Rhule said in his very first press conference that "it begins up front." I feel like this is the first time there have actually been offseason moves that reflect that strategy. More importantly, will the O-line look VERY good in November? Coach Wade has been in the news more often than summer heat warnings. He added 3 guys from the transfer portal and is filling up the 2027 class like a bowl of Wheaties. Reading about Paul Mubenga, Jordan Agbanoma, and Tree Babalade is heartwarming, but I'd rather see improvement from Elijah Pritchett, Gunnar Gottula, and Sam Sledge as well. You can never have enough big guys up front.

Also at the top of the list, I would say, is the Quarterback no one is talking about lately. It's been virtual crickets all spring and summer around the 402. I find it interesting that transfer Anthony Colandrea might as well be on the back of a milk carton. We all know Husker Nation wants to know if he can deliver on the promises of a better guy behind center (and in the locker room). I shouldn't protest too loudly, I guess. It could be worse. Huskers could have portalled in Brendan Sorsby.

Nebraska football’s biggest 2026 questions start with quarterback and offensive line

In the TID BIT category: I'm not upset that Jacory Barney asked Jordan Westerkamp for receiver tips at the 7-7 event that was held recently. I am not alone in thinking he was NOT worth the money last season. Also, TID BIT - the controversy over yet another uniform reveal. Adidas kept their dirty hands off the helmet, so I wasn't too moved. I did appreciate the grooved numbers to emulate cornfields. Someone was actually being creative for the scarlet and cream.

At least tailgate planning can begin now that time slots have been announced for the first 3 games. In case you missed it, Game one September 5 against Ohio will be a morning game. You've heard me complain endlessly about 11 am games, so you know the drill. Game 2 against Bowling Green kicks things off with the first night game at 6pm. And for the ridiculous three-in-a-row home game stretch (not a fan of it), the next game against North Dakota is also an evening bash at 6:15. There will be plenty of time to catch up on what did or didn't happen over the warm months, and there will be plenty of cold beverages in support of all of it.

I know it's only a couple months away. I know the season is not going to be pretty given the opponents. However, I want to see if the quiet will give way to chaos and the Huskers will actually have a great year. That means a bowl game and beating someone they shouldn't. A lot rides on the shoulders of the new quarterback. Is he going to be up to the task? Will Nebraska make the games competitive, or will it resemble the last three games of 2025, where they couldn't close an umbrella with both hands? Either way, we will be there and tailgating because it's what we do. As always, GO BIG RED!
