The Nebraska football team doesn't have many players on active NFL rosters. In fact, they have one of the lowest numbers playing in Week 1 of the season in years. However, among the players who played on Sunday, most made a pretty decent impact.
There is, of course, one more former Nebraska star who will play on Monday night for the Kansas City Chiefs against the Denver Broncos. One of the biggest storylines of the game is all about how many carries and snaps Emmett Johnson will get in his first NFL game.
Former Nebraska football players in Week 1 of the NFL season
Running backs
- Ameer Abdullah, Jacksonville Jaguars: Finished with 91 all-purpose yards in Jacksonville’s 34-10 win over Cleveland. Abdullah carried 4 times for 32 yards, caught one pass for 0 yards and returned 2 kickoffs for 59 yards. He averaged 8.0 yards per carry.
Wide receivers
- Wan’Dale Robinson, Tennessee Titans: Caught 5 passes for 38 yards in Tennessee’s 23-10 loss to the Jets. He tied for the team lead in receiving yards and his long on the day was a 10-yard reception.
Tight end
- Thomas Fidone II, New York Giants: Fidone was healthy and could have played, but he didn't see the field in the Giants' 28-20 win over NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys.
Offensive line
- Cam Jurgens, Philadelphia Eagles: One of the only former Nebraska football players who started for his team on Sunday. He appeared in the game for 55 snaps. He scored a less than impressive 59.2 PFF overall
Defensive line
- Maliek Collins, Cleveland Browns: Played after returning from the PUP list in Cleveland’s 34-10 loss at Jacksonville. He logged 22 snaps, and while he didn't get a tackle or sack, he did manage to tally a quarterback hit and a quarterback hurry.
- Ty Robinson, Philadelphia Eagles: Played in 8 snaps on special teams in Philadelphia’s 24-22 win over Washington. He didn't record a tackle.
- Ben Stille, Detroit Lions: Stille was elevated from the practice squad earlier this week and appeared in Detroit’s 31-30 overtime win over New Orleans. He got 9 snaps on defense but didn't record any statistics.
Cornerback
- Cam Taylor-Britt, Indianapolis Colts: Did not play while serving a one-game NFL suspension during Indianapolis’ loss to Baltimore.
In addition to the Nebraska football players who were on active rosters who played Sunday, Dane Key (Denver Broncos), Isaiah Neyor (Green Bay Packers), Trey Palmer (New Orleans Saints), Henry Lutovsky, Ben Scott, and Javin Wright (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) as well as DeShon Singleton (Kansas City Chiefs) are all on NFL practice squads.
Linebacker Luke Gifford played for the San Francisco 49ers in Australia on Thursday night, though he didn't record any statistics. He appeared for 13 special teams snaps. Emmett Johnson will be the last former Nebraska player to appear in an NFL game this week.
