The Nebraska football team is off to its best start since 2016. It’s also off to its best start under Matt Rhule. Can they keep it rolling through Week 5 against Maryland? Oddsmakers not only believe they can, but that it won’t be all that hard.
The Huskers and Terps are heading in very different directions as 2026 continues. Rhule’s group seems to be convincing more and more people that they are better than any other Nebraska team in the last decade.
Maryland, meanwhile, looks like head coach Mike Locksley is about to be booted out the door. The Terps are coming off a 54-3 loss to UCLA that looks like it’s the low point of Locksley's run with the program. There had been hope he could find a way back to a bowl this year, but after a 2-0 start, his squad has lost two in a row, and the schedule only gets tougher.
All of those factors have likely contributed to Nebraska opening Sunday evening as 14.5-point favorites, according to DraftKings. Alongside the two-touchdown spread, the game total is set at 52.5, suggesting oddsmakers expect the Huskers to put up serious points.
Nebraska football opens the week as two-touchdown favorites over the Maryland Terrapins
It’s been a long time since the Nebraska football team won two straight Big Ten contests to open conference play. It’s also been quite a while since they were big favorites two weeks in a row. While the spread against Michigan State wasn’t as big as it is against Maryland, they were nearly a touchdown favorite over the Spartans in East Lansing.
Should the Huskers manage to reward oddsmakers with another victory, and one against the spread to boot, they’d be off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 2016. This weekend could also mark one of the last times they’re heavy favorites, as the schedule gets much tougher in two weeks when the Indiana Hoosiers come to town.
