While Nebraska football kicks off its Halloween showdown against the Washington Huskies on Saturday night, those Huskers fans who are watching from home might want to keep one eye on Ohio State's game against USC.

In the Buckeyes' last game, starting quarterback Julian Sayin went down with an injury and head coach Ryan Day said he was out for a significant period of time. On Saturday morning, reports began circulating that Luke Fahey is expected to make his first career start when OSU takes on the Trojans at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Fahey had been expected to be the starter after beating out Tavien St. Clair for the backup quarterback job earlier this offseason, but Ohio State reopened the competition between Fahey and St. Clair during the bye week. As recently as Thursday, Day still wasn’t ready to name a starter, wanting the week of practice to play out before picking a No. 1 QB. Now, though, multiple reports have indicated that Ohio State has decided on Fahey as its starter.

Fahey will essentially have three weeks to keep that job before Ohio State travels to Nebraska. Should he perform well against the Trojans the Huskers will get a chance to prepare for him. While Julian Sayin could conceivably be back in time for the Cornhuskers' game, the prognosis offered up by Day made it sound more likely he wouldn't be back before the College Football Playoff if even then.

Luke Fahey takes over Ohio State offense with Nebraska football matchup looming

A true freshman, Fahey has appeared in four games for the Buckeyes this season, completing 9-of-13 passing attempts for 203 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Although he was only a three-star recruit, Fahey has performed better in practice than St. Clair – a five-star prospect in the 2025 recruiting class – to earn the opportunity to be Ohio State’s new starter with Sayin out indefinitely.

“He's an extremely hard worker. He puts a lot of hours in. He's extremely competitive,” Day said of Fahey last week. “He has a moxie about him. He has a competitiveness about him. We're always looking for quarterbacks who are just obsessed with being great, and I think when you get around Luke, you can quickly see how important it is to him."

"He puts a lot of work in. You see when he's there in the preseason or in the offseason, he's in here early with the receivers, and just going through the scripts. And you see him in the meeting rooms, putting in a lot of work, learning the plays. When he steps in the huddle, he's got it. And the linemen feel that.”

If Fahey struggles mightily against USC, it could be time for Ohio State to look towards St. Clair and see if he might be the starter. Either way, Nebraska will start to get a look at who will be under center for the Buckeyes over the next few weeks.
