Can something be a surprise and yet not at all a surprise? It would seem that perfectly encapsulates Nebraska football’s loss of tight end Thomas Fidone.

On Saturday evening, it was reported that Fidone is entering the transfer portal. And with his departure, it appears the saga of the talented tight end is officially over in Lincoln.

There were some rumblings that he wasn’t all that happy with the Nebraska football program in 2024. There were also some rumblings that the Husker coaches weren’t all that happy with him. However, it’s hard to know how much of any of those reports are true and how many were due to a lack of meshing with tight end and offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield.

Once Dana Holgorsen took over as offensive coordinator, he had a lot of good things to say about Fidone. The new OC went out of his way to praise the work habits of Fidone leading up to the Pinstripe Bowl.

The tight end seemed to demonstrate just how hard he was working by hauling down 5 catches for 50 yards. That led NU in the game in receptions.

However, it looks like even if the relationship was getting fixed, Fidone decided it was time for a fresh start. It’s not shocking that he’s deciding to leave after a couple of rough years that included not one but two serious injuries.

Thomas Fidone ends his Nebraska football career with 61 catches for 633 yards and 4 touchdowns. All 4 of those scores came during the 2023 season.
