Even though Emmett Johnson had to wait until the fifth round to be drafted, the former Nebraska star has impressed his new NFL team in short order.
Now with the Kansas City Chiefs, Johnson was in his first rookie mini-camp and showed just why the ex-Husker was the Big Ten running back of the year. In fact, head coach Andy Reid was incredibly impressed by what he saw from the rookie running back.
Emmett Johnson is already earning praise from the Chiefs coaching staff
"First of all, he's got a good feel for things," said Reid when asked about the former Nebraska star. "Smart kid. Good kid. He's got that lateral quickness. We had LeSean McCoy here for a bit. He's got a little bit of that to him, where he can shift gears and still get himself upfield quickly. I like the way he pass protects. I like the way he catches the football. And it looks like he can do that here. We're not doing live stuff, but the catching part, he does easy."
All of that should excite Husker fans who thought Johnson might get drafted quite a bit earlier. Some analysts believed the running back could even go in the second round. Quite a few mock drafts had him going in the third round.
Former Nebraska football star Emmett Johnson could quickly outplay his draft position with the Chiefs
It was quite disappointing to see him last until the 5th round. However, the Chiefs might be the perfect team for him. Reid certainly isn't talking about him like he's the usual 5th round selection who is simply fighting for a roster spot. It almost feels like he's already made the roster and now its whether or not he might compete for a ton of playing time alongside Kenneth Walker.
In the meantime, the ex-Nebraska star is busy making friends with some of the most famous teammates in the NFL. Both Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are already in his camp. Emmett Johnson just keeps impressing everyone he meets in the NFL.
