The Nebraska football team entered fall camp knowing that if there's one extremely unsettled position, it's at running back. That was underlined on Monday when Kwinten Ives was banged up a bit on the first day of practice.
Ives is entering the season as the expected backup to starting running back Emmett Johnson after an excellent spring camp session. Considering there simply aren't a lot of bodies in the running back room, especially ones that are healthy, who will back up Johnson is one of the biggest things to get straight before the season opens.
Nebraska football sees Kwinten Ives injured on first day of camp
During his Monday press conference, Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule divulged that Kwinten Ives suffered a minor lower-body injury. In the words of the coach, Ives "pulled up a bit lame."
For now, it doesn't appear the injury is all that severe. The Huskers' coach said they'd have to wait until Tuesday's practice to figure out precisely what the issue was and how long the running back will be out, if he'll miss any time at all.
One good sign was that the spring standout didn't leave practice entirely, even though he did stop going through the usual drills. Ives limped off the field but stayed at practice to ride the stationary bike and work with the other players in yellow jerseys, signifying they too were beat up.
Running back depth for the Nebraska football team is almost certainly going to be an issue for most of the season. That's one of the reasons freshman wide receiver turned running back Isaiah Mozee switched positions just ahead of fall camp.
