CJ Bronaugh committing to the Florida Gators on Wednesday night was far from a surprise. That doesn’t make the recent Nebraska football decommit already finding his new team any less painful.

Bronaugh decommitted from the Huskers after having been a member of the Huskers' 2026 class since last November. There were signs that he was looking for greener pastures, but there were also some indications that Matt Rhule and company had done enough to keep him in the fold over the weekend. That turned out not to be the case.

Nebraska football loses 2026 defensive back to SEC program after decommitment

Just one day after officially becoming a free agent again, the former Nebraska football player announced his new team. Bronaugh is now a member of the Florida Gators' 2026 class, which has been on a heater over the last few weeks.

Bronaugh will stay in-state and play for the Gators at the next level. He visited Gainesville officially at the beginning of June and returned for an unofficial visit earlier this week.

“It was a good visit,” Bronaugh told On3 after the earlier official visit. “I learn something new every time … They were letting me know how much of a priority I was for them and how I would be a perfect fit.”

It’s not a surprise that the Gators wanted to keep the defensive back at home. Bronaugh is considered one of the fastest players in his class. That is why the Cornhuskers tried to keep him in the fold.

The bad news is that the Nebraska football team is now working with even fewer commits in what was already a relatively paltry 2026 haul. The good news, should there be any, is that it is still six months until signing day. CJ Bronaugh has already shown he can be flipped. The Huskers need to show him why he was right the first time and leave the Sunshine State.
