If the Nebraska football team and the rest of the athletic program left the Big Ten and no one even knew they were members of the conference, would it make a sound?
Some Husker fans have been wishing the university would leave the Big Ten since it joined in 2011. The fact that entities like the Big Ten Network sometimes forget NU is even part of the conference seems like a pretty good reason to finally get out.
Nebraska football and the other members of the athletic program have never really felt like they belonged in the conference they jumped to from the Big 12, but on Tuesday, it appears the Big Ten Network made it clear that not only doesn’t it believe the Cornhuskers belong, but has completely forgotten they’re members of the B1G.
Nebraska football is the red headed stepchild of the Big Ten
During a segment celebrating Ohio State’s National Championship win on Monday night, the network put up a graphic meant to brag about all the current schools that have the most national championships in football going all the way back to 1938.
There they were on the screen. Ohio State (who recently took the lead with 9), then USC with 8, Michigan State with an impressive 6 when going back that far, then Minnesota with 4 and Michigan with 4.
Caught the problem yet?
Nebraska football is a current member of the Big Ten just like USC is. The Huskers also have 5 National titles since 1938 (1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, and 1997). So why weren’t they included on this graphic ahead of both Michigan and Minnesota?
That answer hasn’t come yet. It would appear someone at the Big Ten Network really did just … forget that the Nebraska football team has five titles since 1970. That’s an embarrassing gaffe, especially when it puts the Huskers 4th on this impressive list.
By the way, if we move the date we're going back to 1970, Nebraska football is tied with USC for the conference lead with 5 National Titles. Do better next time, guys.
