Since Dylan Raiola announced he would be looking for greener pastures next month, Nebraska has talked about going into the portal for a new quarterback. There's been quite a bit of talk about what kind of quarterback (or quarterbacks with Marcos Davila leaving, too) the Huskers could go after. Could Ashton Daniels be in the mix?
There have been several names already traced back to the Cornhuskers, but that was before the Auburn quarterback announced he was transferring when the portal opens on January 2. With the potential for the Huskers to try to add two signal callers, could one be a veteran with Daniels' pedigree?
The chances seem slim, considering Daniels has just one year of eligibility left and just spent the last few years battling for playing time with the Tigers. On the other hand, Nebraska has a blessing from TJ Lateef to go get someone who could win the starting job.
Why Ashton Daniels could at least merit a look from Nebraska football
There are also rumors that Daniels might already have a target in mind. Daniels started his career with the Stanford Cardinal before transferring to Auburn last year. It's possible that he could head "home" for his final season. The ACC school will likely look to bring in a new quarterback, and someone familiar with the program can't hurt.
There's another connection to the dual-threat quarterback that could either be a positive or a negative for Nebraska. It's hard to tell which way the door swings these days.
Daniels played his high school ball at Buford High School in Georgia. That's the same school where Dayton and Dylan Raiola played. Huskers head coach Matt Rhule has recruited other Buford players and has a relationship with the coaching staff. It's hard to know whether, at this point, it's a good or bad relationship.
For his part, Rhule has said he'll be looking at anyone and everyone if he thinks they can help Nebraska. With just over a week to go until the portal opens, Husker fans will find out sooner rather than later if Ashton Daniels rates a look.
