Nebraska Cornhuskers news: Texas dismantled, Trae Taylor controversy, more

On Sunday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team found out who will be the quarterback for Bowling Green when the Huskers face off against Eddie George's team. The second-year head coach has named Assumption College transfer Jay Kastantin the starter at quarterback.

• Kastantin will debut for Bowling Green against Tarleton State next weekend. Barring something going horribly wrong, he'll still be the Eagles quarterback when they travel to Lincoln to take on NU a week later on September 12. Kastantin had 3,658 career passing yards and 28 TDs at Assumption. He's one of several new starting quarterbacks due to the Transfer Portal, but one of the few who didn't come from a D-1 program.

Nebraska volleyball dismantles the Texas Longhorns

• After Nebraska volleyball’s dominant sweep of Texas on Sunday afternoon, one point came up over and over as head coach Dani Busboom Kelly, Andi Jackson, and Laney Choboy met with the media. The Huskers had seven service aces, and all three members of Big Red pointed to drilling on serving over and over.

• “It's funny because there's so many times I want to skip serving in practice because I just … it's kind of boring. I'm like, I'm not going to do it. I have to tell myself every day, we're not going to skip it,” The Huskers coach said with a smile. "We're going to keep working hard and just make it part of our routine. And now you see that paying off and the confidence. So sorry, guys, we're going to have to keep doing it.”

• Nebraska also continued to show that it can really draw a crowd. The Huskers' match against Texas drew more than 9,000 fans. It's hardly the kind of attendance they'll get back home, but it continues to show that the Cornhuskers are popular in Nebraska and beyond.

• Nebraska Cornhuskers football commit Trae Taylor had a fantastic first game of his Millard South career on Friday. Unfortunately, this weekend, what he did in the game took a back seat to how he got his stats. After 24 carries for over 100 yards, controversy has arisen over him taking too many hits. Now there's even a disagreement over how the Husker coaches let the star quarterback carry the ball that much. This is a spot of drama that will almost certainly keep getting brought up as the season goes on.

• Former Husker Alante Brown began his seventh year of college football on Saturday, this time with the Memphis Tigers. Brown has battled through injuries in his career, and that's earned him waivers that give him one more season in 2026. For Memphis, Brown served mainly as a return specialist, that included a 43-yard kick return that set up a Tigers touchdown in their 27-21 victory
