Nebraska Cornhuskers news: Soccer surge, Butkus honor, new signing, more

The Nebraska Cornhuskers women’s soccer team got off to a great start to the season as they beat the Louisville Cardinals 3-1 on the road on Wednesday, August 12. Now the Huskers will take on the South Dakota Coyotes on Sunday to open a four-game homestand. Then, they’ll take on No. 2 Notre Dame next week.

• Former Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball player Kendall Blue might not come back to Lincoln for his fifth season, but he did return to town to get his diploma. Blue walked down the aisle wearing his cap and gown on Saturday as one of several NU students who graduated.

• It’s the latest thing for Blue to celebrate, who was part of a lawsuit against the NCAA to get his fifth season after the 5-for-5 eligibility rule was put into place. That lawsuit was successful, and Blue entered the transfer portal earlier this year, so if he wants to play again in the 2026-27 season, he’ll be allowed to.

• Earlier this year, basketball analyst Jon Rothstein said he would buy Nebraska basketball fans beer if the Huskers went on a run in the NCAA Tournament. They did indeed go on that run, and now Rothstein is honoring his word. He’s staging a “Happy Hour” on September 16. That happens to be the same night that the Nebraska volleyball team takes on Creighton.

• Nebraska football linebacker Owen Chambliss is one of the best linebackers in the country, and that was demonstrated again as he was named to the Butkus Award watch list on Thursday. Chambliss earned a spot on the preseason list after a strong 2025 season at San Diego State. A first-team All-Mountain West selection, Chambliss led SDSU with 110 tackles, including 9.5 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks last season.

• Freshman running back Jamal Rule has been impressing everyone who watches him play. Earlier this week, offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen said that Rule will absolutely see playing time this fall. In addition to that, the RB was named as one of the possible breakout players in the Big Ten.

• On Saturday, Emmett Johnson got his first real NFL action with the Kansas City Chiefs and played quite well. He had 69 yards of total offense and played most of the game. As he battles for the RB2 position behind Kenneth Walker III, he made a great case.

• The Nebraska women’s flag football team landed yet another signee. London Jenkins plays at wide receiver and defensive back at Fleming Island High School in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition to Flag Football, she’s also a heck of a women’s basketball player.

• On Saturday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers announced that their October 31 game against Washington will be a Blackout game. They also unveiled a brand new alternate uniform that is a twist on the all-black uniforms they’ve rolled out.
