Nebraska Cornhuskers News: Stars shine, a stinging Blue Blood snub, more

Husker volleyball kicks off strong, Raiola draws big praise, and NU gets left out of a storied list.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team unofficially began its season with its big scrimmage of the fall.The Red team defeated the White team 3-1, though the Huskers often mixed their teams and lineups around for each set.

Rebekah Allick led all players in the glorified practice with 16 kills on .433 hitting with five blocks. It was a strong day for the middle blockers overall, as freshman Kenna Cogill posted 10 kills and five blocks and hit .421, and Andi Jackson had nine kills and hit .412. Freshman Manaia Ogbechie led all players with eight blocks in the match.

Harper Murray tallied 15 kills and nine digs, while Virginia Adriano posted 11 kills with a match-high three aces. Teraya Sigler had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs with a pair of aces, and Skyler Pierce contributed nine kills. Bergen Reilly had 41 assists and 15 digs, while Campbell Flynn had 34 assists and 11 digs. Laney Choboy and Olivia Mauch had 17 and 16 digs, respectively. Next Saturday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers will host an alumni match and then begin the regular season against Pittsburgh on August 22 and Stanford on August 24.

Nebraska Cornhuskers miss out on AP Top 25

On Monday, the AP Top 25 was officially released and to the surprise of no one, the Huskers were not ranked. However, they're not that far out as they got enough votes to tie for 33rd in the rankings. The poll also showed that NU only plays one team ranked in the preseason Top 25 this season, in Michigan.

Dylan Raiola continues to get praise from Huskers

Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola continues to get massive praise from coaches and teammates. Earlier this week, that massive praise included from one of his offensive lineman: "He's taken a massive leap in how he sees the field from last year to this year," Nebraska offensive lineman Tyler Knaak said. "He's helping us make protection calls, he can see stuff that we don't sometimes with how the safeties rotate."

Nebraska is not a Blue Blood anymore?

On Monday, On3 analyst Andy Staples released his official list of Blue Bloods and while Tennessee and Miami made the list, the Nebraska Cornhuskers were left off. Staples' rationale involved not winning a National Title in the BCS era, as basically the only reason NU didn't make it.
