The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team continued rebuilding the team that hosted its first regional in almost two decades over the weekend by adding a powerful Transfer Portal slugger. Kellan Burke comes to Lincoln after one season at Cloud County Community College in Kansas.

The Minot, North Dakota, native started all 57 games for the Thunderbirds, finishing the season with a .413 batting average. He totaled 93 RBIs, 86 hits, 21 home runs, and 16 doubles. Before he played college baseball, he was also the North Dakota Gatorade Player of the Year. In other words, he was considered the best player in the state for his recruiting class.

Burke was also named to the All-Tournament Team for the 2026 NJCAA Division I Plains District Baseball Tournament. He batted 5-for-9 in the tournament with two home runs, six runs scored, and 4 RBI. He won the 2025 North Dakota Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year after batting .557 with three home runs, 27 RBI, and 33 runs scored. He also recorded 10 stolen bases and threw out over 53 percent of would-be base-stealers from behind the plate. He's an interesting wild card pickup for the Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team.

Jacory Barney earns Nebraska's lone Phil Steele All-American bid

With the release of Phil Steele's annual magazine, he's also released his preseason All-American teams. Steele puts together four units for this group, including four special teams units. Nebraska wide receiver Jacory Barney earned fourth-team All-American punt returner.

Last season, Barney was a weapon on offense and special teams. He tallied 45 catches for 484 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also returned 22 punts for 270 yards. He had a long return of 57 yards. He also returned 13 kicks for 275 yards. The triple threat could have an even bigger year in 2026, and that would certainly be great for the Huskers.

  • With the Oklahoma Sooners winning the College World Series, the 2025-26 athletic season is officially over, and the Governor's Cup standings are official. The Huskers finished No. 17 in the standings, ranking them No. 5 in the Big Ten. It's the highest finish in years, underscoring that while the football team hasn't turned things around, the athletic department has had its best season since the 1990s.
  • Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule recently spoke to the Omaha World-Herald about his expectations for the 2026 season, and at the top of the list is the belief that this will be the best offensive line he's ever had.
  • Speaking of Oklahoma winning the College World Series, former Husker Cayden Brumbaugh laid out what he thinks the big differences are between the Sooners' program and the Huskers. Most notably, he believes that OU's pitching depth and high ceiling for every player, even if some struggle every now and then. He pointed out that Nebraska simply doesn't have the arsenal that the SEC school does.
  • Trae Taylor won the Elite 11 Finals MVP, putting him in incredibly rarified air. The Nebraska Cornhuskers commit is among a group that has been especially good at reaching the NFL and playing in it over the last decade. That certainly bodes well for the young quarterback's future with NU.
