Nebraska Cornhuskers News: Honoring Derek Phillips, injury return, two-way star, more

On most other days, there's no love lost between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Iowa Hawkeyes athletic programs. However, on Saturday, both schools did their part to remember and honor Derek Phillips.

• Phillips was a member of Iowa's marching band who died last week after he collapsed due to the heat during the Hawkeyes' game against Northern Illinois. It's the kind of loss that hits people at their core and unites marching bands from programs across the country into one community. Phillips' teammates with the Hawkeyes band paid tribute to him during their halftime production, and the heartbreaking scene showed more than a few members of the band barely holding it together and fighting back tears.

• For the Nebraska Cornhuskers' part, the NU marching band wore Gold and Black ribbons on their uniforms as a show of solidarity with the Iowa band, which has clearly suffered a loss it's still very much hurting from.

• The Nebraska Cornhuskers had about as dominant a performance against Bowling Green as they've had in years. In fact, the Huskers allowed less than 40 yards of offense in the first half while getting just over 330 yards of offense of their own. While the second half wasn't quite as dominant, the 56-7 victory was still the kind of win that should give Husker fans some confidence heading into the middle of the season.

• The win was great, but more than that, the Huskers got back one of the best defenders from injury. Owen Chambliss missed the game against Ohio to start the season with a hamstring injury, but he made his NU debut on Saturday night and made an impact to boot. The linebacker tallied 4 tackles, and while he clearly didn't dominate, he not only came back healthy but also posted some stats. Next week, he'll get even more.

• On the soon-to-be Nebraska Cornhuskers star, Tory Pittman had himself quite the game earlier this week. On offense, Pittman scored three touchdowns for Millard North. On defense, he forced a fumble. The 5-star commit said he wants to convince Matt Rhule and Co. that he can play both ways in college. If he has more games like he did this past week, he might make some serious progress in that direction.

• The Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team wasn't at its sharpest to open its Saturday match against Georgia Tech. However, after losing its first set of the season against the Yellowjackets and going down 5-0 in the second set, the Huskers woke up in a big way.

• They closed the second set on a 25-12 run to tie the match, then won the third and fourth sets 25-18 and 25-12, and got another win. Still undefeated this year, this might have been the match that makes them even scarier.
