Now that Nebraska basketball has added a frontcourt player in the portal, it looks like Fred Hoiberg and Co. are working to land one of the better pass-first point guards available. After hosting Utah Valley's Trevan Leonhardt, the Huskers are hoping he'll pull the trigger soon on committing to NU.
Should the Cornhuskers win the services of Leonhardt, it looks as though they'll beat out an Arizona State that is trying to dig out of the mess that was Bobby Hurley's era in Tempe. As of now, NU and ASU appear to be the teams in the battle, so Leonhardt could announce his school of choice any day.
Leonhardt is considered one of Nebraska's priority targets but they are still waiting on news from another priority prospect in power forward Drew Fielder. The Huskers are squaring off against Washington in that battle, and there are some indications that the Huskies might have a slight edge there.
Trevan Leonhardt could give Nebraska basketball the pass-first point guard it needs
Leonhardt averaged 12.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game while ranking 23rd nationally with 6.0 assists per contest this past season. He helped guide Utah Valley to a 25-9 finish while earning first-team All-Western Athletic Conference and All-WAC Defensive Team honors.
The Wolverines' point guard looks like he could be a Sam Hoiberg clone, as he does everything well. He even posted a game where he had 3 blocks. His season high in assists in one game was 13, and his season high of points scored in a game was 26.
Now that Tevan Leonhardt has paid a visit to Lincoln, the Huskers will hope he pulls the trigger while also hosting another guard in Illinois State's Ty'Reek Coleman on Tuesday and Wednesday. With the addition of Sam Orme, Nebraska has five roster spots it needs to fill this offseason.
