The Nebraska basketball team is looking high and low for players that might be able to help them in the 2025-26 season. As it turns out, they may not have to look that far.
Omaha Mavericks star Marquel Sutton entered the transfer portal earlier this week. And it took no time at all for Fred Hoiberg and company to reach out and see whether or not the Summit League player of the year might like to stay in the state.
The good news is that while Sutton isn’t an in-state prospect, he’s spent the last three years playing in Omaha. He knows the state and if it all works out, he would almost certainly not mind sticking with the Nebraska basketball team. The bad news, for the Huskers at least, is that there are plenty of good teams who want his services. That includes both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Since he does hail from Tulsa, Oklahoma he’s going to be able to choose between “staying home” or going home.
NEWS: Omaha star wing Marquel Sutton has heard from these schools since going portaling, he told @LeagueRDY:

Nebraska basketball enters the race for Omaha Mavericks star
The Sooners, Cowboys and Cornhuskers aren’t the only teams coming after Sutton. Kansas State, Ole Miss, USC, and Tulsa as well as others have reached out to him.
This past season, Sutton averaged 18.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Best of all, while those numbers are improvements over last season, it’s less that they outliers and more that he was “the guy” for the Mavericks.
It’s going to be a fight for the Nebraska basketball team. It’s the second straight year they’ve gone after Omaha’s best player. Maybe they can win the fight this time.
