Nebraska basketball has spent much of the offseason trying to find the perfect replacement for Jamarques Lawrence. However, what if the Huskers don’t have to replace Lawrence at all? The veteran guard is hoping that just might be the case thanks to a proposed new 5-for-5 rule change in the NCAA. The problem is, no one seems to know whether the rule will be adopted and when it will take effect.

Lawrence and Kendall Blue are both on record saying that if the rule applies to them, the four-year seniors would return to the Huskers. However, they've both entered the Transfer Portal to keep their options open. Depending on how long it takes the rule to cycle through, the Cornhuskers might not have a spot for either one of them.

Nebraska basketball dealing with another NCAA rules uncertainty

"This whole thing is just confusing," Lawrence told On3 recently. "We're all trying to figure it out." Nebraska is far from the only school in a holding pattern. Several programs have players who entered the portal but said they wanted to return, if possible.

Unfortunately, as is often the case with the NCAA, there isn’t any clarity. There’s no word on how quickly things could move or who should wait and who should just move on. Such is the world of college sports these days.

If the 5-for-5 rule does pass, it would be a simple change that could cause a massive shift in eligibility. The rule states that a player has five years to use up their five years of eligibility. For Lawrence and Blue, it means one more year for them to play for Nebraska.

Jamarques Lawrence waits on uncertain Nebraska basketball future

On the flip side, guys like Jamarques Lawrence went through senior day at Nebraska thinking there was no chance they’d get another shot. There is at least hope the veteran guard could return and try to help the Huskers to another historic run.
