The college basketball coaching carousel has officially started turning with the firing of Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang. The Wildcats decided to fire Tang in the middle of his fourth season, citing cause due to his viral rant after Wednesday's nearly 30-point loss to Cincinnati. Now could they come calling for Nebraska basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg?
Tang stated that none of his guys deserved to wear the uniform, and they were an embarrassment to the team and the university. In K-State's game against No. 3 Houston on Saturday, the players did not wear their last names on the back of their jerseys, probably referring back to Tang's comments.
Now the Wildcats begin their hunt for a new head coach, and some names have already begun to surface, one being Nebraska's Fred Hoiberg. While Kansas State fans would love for that to happen, there is no chance Hoiberg leaves the Huskers after this season.
The 2025-2026 season as locked in Fred Hoiberg at Nebraska for years to come
Hoiberg set a Nebraska basketball record for the best start in program history, winning the first 20 games of the season. Since then, the Huskers have struggled a bit, but it is better to have problems now than in the NCAA Tournament. Hoiberg is also eyeing another piece of history while at Nebraska.
In March Madness, Nebraska is a historic 0-8, never winning a game in the big dance. Hoiberg has the chance to change that this season, as Nebraska is looking to get a very favorable seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
While the Kansas State job could be intriguing with the inevitable rebuild that is coming, Hoiberg already did that at Nebraska, and there is just no way he is letting that go for ajob a couple of hours south. Hoiberg had put the time and effort into building this Nebraska basketball program, and he has to stay put for just a little while longer.
