First domino falls as Nebraska football adds offensive mastermind to staff
One day after Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule said he was bringing in “outside eyes” to examine what’s going wrong with the program, it appears he’s doing more than just asking people to offer their opinion. He’s reportedly hired a new offensive consultant whose role could “evolve” throughout the season.
On Tuesday morning, Pete Thamel was the first to report that Rhule hired former Houston and West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen. The report should hardly be surprising to Husker fans. There were rumors that Rhule was talking to Holgorsen before the season began, but nothing about a full-time position materialized.
The now-confirmed report by several other members of the media’s most exciting aspect is definitely that his role could be evolving. That certainly sounds like Holgorsen is an offensive consultant for now. However, he may be an actual staff member before things are said and done.
Nebraska football adds offensive firepower to staff
There's been a ton of pressure on the Huskers' head coach to make a change at offensive coordinator almost since Marcus Satterfield was hired. Over the offseason, he made a small change by bringing in a co-offensive coordinator in Glenn Thomas. However, Rhule kept the playcalling duties on Satterfield's desk.
Some have called for Thomas to take over playcalling duties, but it doesn't appear that's in the cards with the hiriing of Holgorsen. Or it could mean that before the season is out, there will be a big change in the staff.
With a rule change before the season, Rhule can have as many assistant coaches on his staff as he wants. However, all three of Satterfield, Thomas and Holgorsen sure feels like too many cooks in the kitchen.
Just who might be moving out is up in the air, considering that before becoming a head coach he was both a QB coach and offensive coordinator.
Best known for his days at West Virginia he also served as a head coach at Houston while notching stops at Texas Tech and Oklahoma State among others in his coaching career.
The new Nebraska offensive consultant has a career 92-69 record as a head coach, however thing to watch here is how he meshes with Husker players. The flamboyant coach has a reputation for not always getting along with his charges. That may be one reason why it appears he's coming in on a kind of trial basis.
