Nebraska football and baseball fans are used to celebrating the calls that Greg Sharpe makes when calling the Huskers game. Now, those same fans can celebrate Sharpe for his own personal victory.

Sharpe, the longtime voice for Nebraska football, baseball, and the host of the "Sports Nightly" program heard across the state, was awarded on Monday night with the Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year honor from the National Sports Media Association.

Executive Director Dave Goren called into Sports Nightly on Monday night to personally share the news with Sharpe. "I wanted to ring out 2024 in a good way, and ring in 2025 in a better way," Goren said over the phone to the famed Nebraska football and baseball broadcaster. "You have been elected by your peers as the 2024 Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year."

Voice of Nebraska football gets big honor

The votes that were awarded to Sharpe come from members of the state, meaning that the honor was awarded by other sports broadcasters from across Nebraska.

For his part, Sharpe said that it made his award that much more special. Because he won the award given to him by his peers.

Sharpe’s honor comes during an emotional time for the voice of the Nebraska football team. Earlier this spring he divulged he had cancer. And earlier this month it was revealed that the cancer treatments are not working as well as the family had hoped.

After getting to celebrate Christmas with his family, it appears that Sharpe is ending the month and the year with some very good news.
