The Nebraska football team continues to add transfer portal pieces as it reshapes its roster ahead of the 2025 campaign. While head coach Matt Rhule has said that he wants to build for the long term, departures this offseason have forced his hand.
On Sunday, the Huskers added their 14th portal player. This one a defensive back out of FCS level Southern Illinois. And while Jamir Conn might have some growing to do there’s some definite talent.
The Nebraska football team is replacing guys like DeShon Singleton and Tommi Hill in 2025 and it’s clear they’re not leaving any stone unturned. Check out why Jamir Conn is such a massive addition for NU just months ahead of spring practice.
Nebraska football adds aggressive defensive back
Current Lee’s Summit North High School head coach, Jason Rogers, was the linebackers coach at LSN when Conn was a senior and he’s more than a little impressed with what Conn can do.
The Southern Illinois star notched 59 tackles and 6 passes defended in 2024 and Rogers says that’s because while Conn isn’t that tall (6-foot-0) he is rangy he makes the most of what he has.
Jamir Conn has room to grow
It’s clear that the FCS product needs to develop a bit more in order to compete on the Power Conference level, but he’s shown real improvement from his freshman to sophomore season. And the really good news is that he has at least two more seasons to turn into something special.
Conn is one of the most interesting portal additions precisely because he’s not one and done. The Huskers’ added depth for not just 2025 but beyond.
Kansas City is becoming quite the feeder
It’s pretty clear that Matt Rhule is leaning hard on new assistant Jamar Mozee when it comes to adding big time talent. Conn played high school football for Mozee at Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North. During his senior season, he was teammates with portal transfer Williams Nwaneri and 2025 signee Isaiah Mozee.
Nebraska football also added four-star edge linebacker Dawson Merritt from Overland Park (Kans.) Blue Valley and three-star offensive lineman Juju Marks from Olathe (Kans.) Olathe South.
