The Nebraska football team spent a few weeks worried that its defensive coordinator was headed for greener pastures. On Friday, Tony White secured the bag.

Despite having one of the more coveted coordinators, that seemingly had more connections with openings than anyone could have anticipated, Nebraska Football fans can breathe a sigh of relief. For a team that is looking for stability, and to maintain a level of consistency in their play, keeping a hold of the head of the improved defense was arguably the most important offseason move for Matt Rhule.

Nebraska Football keeps same defensive coordinator for 2024

Friday morning it was announced that Tony White and the Nebraska program had agreed on a restructured deal to ensure that he would stay in Lincoln for the foreseeable future.

Having interviewed with a couple of schools, the two sides agreed on an additional $1.2 million over the next two years keeping any other potential schools from luring him away for now.

In a released statement, head coach Matt Rhule doubled down on the positive appraisal that he has publicly had for the assistant coach.

"Tony White has all the attributes you look for in a coordinator or assistant coach. He builds great relationships with players and fellow coaches and is an elite teacher and communicator."

With his contract locked up players can look forward to a second year of not only playing in the same system, but also building on the vital trust that has his players believing on the field.

Nebraska Football  defensive improvement under Tony White

For a team that was  looking to rebound in many facets, improving the defense was a primary task for this new coaching staff. Though some were skeptical of a 3-5 defense in the Big Ten, Tony White has all but silenced his critics. This past season saw such noticeable improvement that he not only earned his enticing job interviews, but also national recognition.

In a recent statement he gave the following:

"I am proud of what our players accomplished this year and am excited to build on that success moving forward…Go Big Red!"

With how well he has done this season, and how well it is working with this staff Tony White is not taking any time to rest after the news of this extension. With the financials secured, he is now free to hit the ground running for Nebraska football on the first day of off-campus recruiting. With his ability to develop, and the effort he is giving on the recruiting trail, it will not surprise anyone if next year he is leading a top ten defense in the nation.
