USF transfer quarterback could be Nebraska football fit
The Nebraska football team is likely looking for a portal quarterback and it turns out there’s one who could be a great fit for Matt Rhule.
When Matt Rhule teamed up with a former Baylor Bears player in Lincoln, it worked out pretty good for both of them. Perhaps he can do it again, but this time do with with a former Baylor Bears quarterback.
USF quarterback Gerry Bohanon announced earlier this week that he intends to enter the transfer portal. While he played 2023 in Tampa with the Bulls, he spent most of his college career in Waco. A decent part of that being under Rhule.
It’s worth pointing out that after Rhule talked about how much going out and getting one of the top transfer quarterbacks in the sport would cost, Bohanon seems like he might be a relative bargain.
The question there is whether or not Nebraska football fans would be willing to accept a “bargain” who might also be a bit of a project. After all, they saw what happened with Rhule and offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield’s last “project” in Jeff Sims.
Nebraska football might need to get creative
At the moment, it’s not clear if Rhule’s talk about the potential price tag of a transfer quarterback was more of a tamping down of expectations, or just spitting facts. We’ll likely find out as the offseason goes on.
There are already a few quarterbacks who seemed poised to find landing spots quickly. Guys like Will Howard, who seemed like a natural target for Nebraska football doesn’t appear interested in the Huskers.
That could mean Rhule and his staff have to get creative.
In limited 2022 action, Bohanon threw for 1,070 yards, 6 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. However, with Baylor in 2021 he threw for over 2,000 yards, 18 TDs and just 7 INTs. He’s also got mobility that got him around 300 yards on the ground. He hasn’t thrown a pass in 2023.
Bohanon is unlikely Plan A for Nebraska football, but he could be a nice fallback and could end up a nice surprise.
