Despite having one of the best defenses in the country, the Nebraska Cornhuskers did not have a single player on first or second team All Big Ten teams.
The Nebraska football team’s defense was 7th in the country against the rush. It was 14th in the country in total defense. And 17th in college football in total points.
Normally, that kind of performance would have had several Nebraska Cornhuskers Blackshirts making the all-conference team. At lease the second or third team.
However, on Monday, when the All Big Ten teams were announced, just one member of the Huskers made any team at all. Luke Reimer was named to the third team All Big Ten by the coaches and honorable mention by the media.
Beyond that DE Jimari Butler, S Omar Brown, S Isaac Gifford, CB Tommi Hill, CB Quinton Newsome, DL Ty Robinson, DL Nash Hutmacher all made honorable mention.
It’s pretty amazing that many Nebraska football players made honorable mention but there weren’t more on the team considering just how good the defense was. It certainly seems like quite the snub. I suppose that’s what happens when the team is 5-7.
Other Nebraska Cornhuskers news
- The Nebraska Cornhuskers Spring Game officially has a kickoff date. During a radio appearance on Tuesday night, athletic director Trev Alberts announced that the Spring Game is going to take place on April 27, 2024. As it turns out, that’s the next time fans will get to watch the Nebraska football team. It’s almost certainly going to have a brand new look when it next takes the field.
- While Tony White might be staying put, another coach who worked with Matt Rhule looks like he might have a new job. Fran Brown, who coached with Rhule at Baylor and Temple is thought to be the odds on favorite to be the head coach at Syracuse. Brown is currently the defensive backs coach with the Georgia Bulldogs. There was a time when some thought the Nebraska Cornhuskers might find a way to lure Brown to Lincoln. It’s a moot point now.
