The Nebraska football team is almost certainly going to be portal shopping when it opens on and there’s one FCS quarterback who could be targeted.

It seems like a foregone conclusion that the Nebraska football team is going to be shopping for a quarterback in the transfer portal this offseason. The question is going to be who exactly the Huskers think they can get.

Last year, Jeff Sims was seen as a pretty decent grab, but he wasn’t considered among the Top 5 quarterbacks in the portal. This year, there are some big names expected to be available, but it’s a question as to whether they’ll be gettable.

One name that is entering the portal seems like it might be right at the level the Huskers could aim for. It just so happens that he’s talented enough he could give the Cornhuskers offense quite the boost.

Matthew Sluka is going to be leaving Holy Cross after a very successful FCS career. He could be exactly what Matt Rhule and company need to run their offense the right way. The way that will finally get them over the hump and into a bowl game.

Nebraska football could find perfect fit in FCS transfer

Over the course of his career, Sluka has thrown for 5,896 yards, 59 touchdowns, and just 15 interceptions. Even better than those numbers is that he’s clearly shown himself to be a dual-threat kind of quarterback, as he’s also rushed for 3,579 yards and 38 TDs.

He’s run for over 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons and has never had more than five interceptions in a single season.

According to PFF, Sluka’s season earned him a 92.3 grade in 2023. That’s the best of his career and just a slight step up from his 91.6 a year ago.

If all of this seems to good to be true, that’s because it might be. The Nebraska football team should absolutely go after the Holy Cross signal caller. It’s unlikely they’ll be the only Power 5 program going after him. One has to wonder if they could pull him in if someone with a better recent track record comes calling.
