If Nebraska Football loses its’ much-lauded defensive coordinator this offseason, Mississippi State might have provided an easy replacement.
Husker fans are a bit worried that new defensive coordinator Tony White is all but gone after this season.
Whether he takes a higher paid defensive coordinator job at a better school, or tries his hand as a head coach at a mid-major, many think White is gone. That would be a bad thing. However, it’s possible that an SEC also-ran just provided Nebraska Football a bit of a safety net.
They did it by firing head coach Zach Arnett after just one season on the job. Now he’s looking for a new landing spot. And Lincoln could fit the bill.
If Tony White goes somewhere else – and yes it’s still very much an if – then not only would Zach Arnett be a great replacement hire for a variety of reasons, but Matt Rhule might be able to even get his former DC to recruit his new defensive coordinator.
Nebraska Football could have DC on speed dial
It turns out that White and Arnett coached together at the same place I could see the Huskers’ current defensive coordinator going as a head coach. They worked together at San Diego State.
While White was the cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator, Arnett was first a GA and then the Aztecs’ linebacker coach. Arnett was the defensive coordinator for SDSU the year after White left.
The two men worked on and perfected the same kind of 3-3-5 defense that both Mississippi State did when Arnett was the DC there and White ran as the DC here.
Dominos are beginning to fall at a rather crazy rate. The Nebraska Football team would like to stay out of the coaching carousel if it can. However, if Tony White decides to find greener pastures, there is officially someone who could step in, without missing a beat.
