One particular Nebraska Football fan wanted to ensure that the Maryland Terapins understood they were no longer welcome in the state.

The Cornhuskers state used to pride itself in the people residing within its borders demonstrating what “Nebraska Nice” meant. Then in 2019, the tourism board launched a PR campaign that drew quite a bit of criticism at the time.

"“Nebraska, it’s not for everyone.”"

The slogan was certainly not for everyone. Many people felt that the tagline seemed to be dissuading visitors from coming here. Last Saturday, one Nebraska Football fan embodied that sentiment at halftime of a game the Maryland Terapins came from behind to topple the Huskers.

An Omaha man named David Hernandez was arrested at Memorial stadium after he allegedly spit on a Maryland player. Hernandez was charged with disturbing the peace. That ranks as a third-degree misdemeanor.

If true, it would certainly be one of the worst things that a Nebraska Football fan has been accused of doing at Memorial Stadium. For the most part, Husker fans pride themselves on being above that sort of behavior.

Many pride themselves on treating opponents and opposing fans with a level of respect they claim they aren’t shown then they venture outside of Lincoln. The Nebraska Football team has made a little prayer that seems to embody sportsmanship famous by incorporating it into their pregame talks.

"If I should win, let it be by the code, with my faith and my honor held high. If I should lose, let me stand by the road and cheer as the winners go by."

Fans pride themselves on taking the same approach as a whole. And then there’s the incident on Saturday.

Nebraska Football fan disputes what happened

For his part, Hernandez claims that the Maryland player is actually at fault.

What doesn’t seem to be in dispute is that Hernandez and at least one other Cornhuskers fan started “jawing” with Terapins players. Things got heated as halftime arrived and it’s then that Hernandez is alleged to have spit on a player, Gavin Gibson.

However, Hernandez claims he wasn’t even in the area. He claims he went to the bathroom.

Video of the incident shows that tensions were indeed high. It shows that Nebraksa Football fans crossed the line when Maryland was trying to get to its locker room.

The visit this past weekend was the first for the Terps in quite a while. It seems that they left happy with the victory but probably thinking Nebraska isn’t really for them.
