Nebraska football recruiting efforts have focused on a brand new 2024 recruit as they try and land themselves one more 2024 defensive back.

We’re just a few months away from the Nebraska football team putting the finishing touches on its 2024 class. But that doesn’t mean the coaches aren’t trying to get a few last-minute additions before the early signing period arrives.

Nebraska football recruiting has apparently identified at least one defensive back the Huskers believe could be quite the addition to the defensive backfield. Gregory Smith III just received an offer from the Cornhuskers with just a few months to try and close the deal.

One of the most interesting things about the offer for Smith is that he’s better known as a quarterback at the high school level. This season, he’s thrown for 13 touchdowns and run for four more. But it’s as a future member of the Blackshirts that the Nebraska football coaches are most interested in seeing what he can do.

Think Cam Taylor-Britt. He was a successful quarterback in high school that turned in quite the career as a defensive back for the Huskers. It’s safe to say Matt Rhule would love to see Smith walk in those kinds of shoes.

Nebraska football recruiting zeroing in on new target

In order to reel in the 3-star prospect, Nebraska football is going to have some work to do. 247Sports has the Florida Gators and the Florida State Seminoles as the front runners in this race.

Rivals believe the Gators and the Iowa State Cyclones, of all teams, are the two schools at the top of the list for the quarterback/defensive back.

It’s possible that ISU being in the picture is actually the foot-in-the-door that Nebraska football needs. If Smith is looking at leaving the Sunshine State, then it’s possible Lincoln would be better than Ames.
