Nebraska football recruiting took a bit of a hit on Sunday night as they lost out on an offensive lineman the Huskers hoped they could haul in.

Granted, it appears that most people knew that Nebraska football recruiting was pulling a rabbit out of its hat had the Hukers been able to haul in Brandon Baker.

On Sunday evening, Baker held his selection event where he announced he committed to the Texas Longhorns. That selection wasn’t remotely surprising. That doesn’t make it any easier to swallow for Cornhuskers fans.

Baker is the top-rated offensive lineman in the 2024 class. Nebraska football recruiting is aiming high, but it’s not quite in a spot where it will have much chance to land a player of that caliber.

Especially when the school is going against one of the hottest names in college football this year. For now, it looks like the Longhorns are back. They’re certainly back to landing some of the top players in the country.

Nebraska football recruiting striking out on Baker means that they’ve now been in the running, but lost out on the nation’s top quarterback prospect and the top offensive line prospect in the 2024 class.

That could certainly be a sign of good things to come, assuming the Huskers actually start winning and offering recruits a chance at championships. For now, it’s a bit of a back to the drawing board moment on Sunday night.

Nebraska football recruiting’s flirtation with Brandon Baker

There were certainly signs that the Huskers were not near the top of Baker’s list. Just a few days ago, he received several crystal balls on 247Sports for Texas.

That despite the fact that Nebraska football recruiting got the last crack at the massive lineman. Baker came to Lincoln to take in the Northern Illinois game. He likely got to see a Huskers line that could use a boost in the talent department.

Just where Matt Rhule and company go from here will be interesting to watch.
