The Nebraska football team had some injury added to the insult of the last-second loss as it appears it lost one of its starting wide receivers to injury.
The Nebraska football team didn’t just take a loss last night against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. It also appears to have lost a one of its starting wide receivers. At least for a little while.
Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda has to be wondering what he did to deserve this. The wide receiver started the season decent enough for the second straight year, only to suffer an injury.
On Thursday night, the wide receiver had a very nice scoop of a catch that kept a drive going in the first half of the game. The announcers even thought the pass was skipped to Garcia-Castaneda but after reviewing the play, it was clear that he got his arms under the ball and hauled it in.
Nebraska football fans likely wondered where he went after that catch. Granted, it’s not like any of the Huskers had a particularly good game. Alex Bullock led the team with 3 catches for 56 yards. And most of those 56 yards were on the 34 yard insane trick play that shouldn’t have worked.
But where did Castaneda go? It turns out he got hurt. And it doesn’t feel like the Nebraska football coaches are optimistic about his prognosis.
Nebraska football loses a receiver
During the post game press conference, head coach Matt Rhule briefly touched on Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda’s injury, though he didn’t say exactly what the issue was.
Rhule did say that the injury “might be serious.” It would appear the plan today and in the next few days is to get the receiver looked at. But for now, it seems like at the very least, he’ll be out for next week’s game against Colorado, barring a miracle.
Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda can’t catch a break
The injury, if it does end up being as serious as Rhule alluded to, might be a disastrous end to a Nebraska football career that looked like it was on a redemption arc.
Garcia-Castaneda got his college degree earlier this summer. He’d talked about wanting to be a calming presence and leader on the team. Now his season might be over just after it got started. That’s bad enough.
That the Nebraska football team’s thin wide receiver room just got quit thinner is quite a bit worse.
