The Nebraska football team has made an offer to Texas’ top player, and the Huskers are almost immediately considered among the favorites to land them.

All the focus for Nebraska football might seemingly be on preparation for the Minnesota game, but the coaching staff is also working hard to ensure that future versions of the roster are well-stocked.

Nebraska football recruiting efforts are still going strong. In fact, they’ve ramped up a bit in late August, including a brand-new offer to the top player in Texas for the 2026 class. Kevin Ford Jr. announced he got an offer late last week.

While doling out offers to players that won’t be set foot on the field for several years can be seen as just getting a foot in the door, it appears that Nebraska football recruiting has made some serious gains with Ford.

The 6-foot-3 edge rusher already has eight scholarship offers. Penn State, Texas A&M and Arizona State are among the Power 5 programs involved in his recruiting. However, according to On3, it appears as though Nebraska football is already among the leaders in the clubhouse.

The recruiting website currently has the Cornhuskers pegged as having a 40.3 percent chance of landing the Lone Star State’s top player in 2026. There’s only one school that Matt Rhule and company are currently trailing.

Nebraska football takes on SMU

The SMU Mustangs are currently seen as the favorites to land Kevin Ford Jr. It’s important to remember that by the time the Duncanville prospect can sign an LOI, the Huskers may no longer have the built in advantage of being a Power 5 program.

There’s been a ton of  talk that the Mustangs will eventually join either the Big 12 or the ACC in the next few years. Then they’ll basically be on equal footing. Hopefully that means the Nebraska football team will press its advantage and worm its way into Kevin Ford Jr’s heart before then.
