The Big Ten football world was hit by an earthquake on Wednesday when it was announced that the Iowa Hawkeyes defensive lineman was suspended for a year.

The many, many Iowa and Iowa State players that were caught gambling on sports and even gambling on their own teams are starting to see punishments get doled out. That includes the Hawkeyes, who found out on Wednesday that defensive lineman Noah Shannon is suspended for one year.

While Iowa is reportedly appealing the decision from the NCAA, it seems unlikely that the term will be reversed. If it sticks, the Hawkeyes will have to find a way to replace some decent production.

Last season, Shannon had 44 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. He might not have been the most dominant Big Ten football player around but he started 27 games over the last two seasons.

The issue for Big Ten football and the Hawkeyes is that it seems unlikely he’ll be the last. It’s certainly worth something to watch in the coming weeks.

Purdue wants Dillon Thieneman to shake up the Big Ten football world

There’s been a lot of talk about the freshmen to watch in the Big Ten football world the last few days and the Purdue Boilermakers think that freshman safety Dillon Thieneman should be on that list.

During the spring and summer, the defender impressed his teammates.

“My man Dillon right here coming in, in the weight room, on the field, wherever you look at it,” star defensive back Cam Allen told Rivals. “He’s already on top of the boards on everything. So I mean, just coming in and seeing what he do, me and [Sanoussi] doing our best to get him in the right spot and position,” Allen said. “Looking through my eyes, it’s a whole bunch of things he did that I ain’t seen a true freshman [do] in a long time.”

Penn State projected to be in New Years Six Bowl

The good news for Nittany Lions fans is that ESPN’s bowl projections from Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach agree on one thing; Penn State should be making plans for a New Years Six bowl at the end of the 2023 season.

The bad news? Penn State isn’t going to be in the playoffs. Though that shouldn’t be a massive surprise considering they have to contend with Michigan and Ohio State in their own division.

Making a New Years Six bowl game, without making the playoffs is an impressive achievement and shows the strength of Big Ten football.
